my story

I’ve done many things and I write about all of it.

I’m an artist, a thinker, a communicator.

I bring people together to create new stuff out of old stuff and tear up whatever no longer works.

I am a native of Nashville, TN where I spent almost all my formative years through college.

I’ve had an interesting life since hitting my early 20s.

I spent about 10 years as a professional theatre artist (actor, director, designer, writer), in which I founded a professional not-for-profit company in my hometown, Nashville, TN.

Hold up, lane change ..

I then went to seminary while I served as a youth pastor in Nashville, before serving as pastor for a small congregation in Coastal Georgia. Suffering from burn-out and wanting to focus on being a better husband and father, I resigned from vocational ministry and …

Another lane change …

I then served as manager for a local transitional housing shelter.

Uhhh, changing again …

Shortly thereafter, we moved to Jacksonville, FL where I taught public high school (literature, theatre, critical thinking skills, theory of knowledge). After a hiatus of several years, I …

Changed back into a previous lane …

For two years, I plunged back into vocational ministry serving as an associate pastor at a local church. I finally figured out I spoke a bit too much truth to power, consequently I couldn’t make those who run religious power structures happy. I left that mess for good.

Yet another lane change …

I am Professor of Humanities and Theatre with St. Johns River State College. I also am an adjunct professor of philosophy and theology with Southeastern University. In addition, I have been working on my PhD in Humanities for several years. Grinding through the dissertation phase now. Meanwhile …

You guessed it, dropping back into a familiar lane …

I’ve been acting, directing, and producing again for the past few years. Currently working with a team on bringing an Equity-affiliated professional repertory company to Northeast Florida.

During all these transitions I’ve managed to publish my first book, produce some podcasts, and speak and preach in many varied and engaging settings.

What about my family? My wife, Heather, and I have 3 kids who don’t have an off switch.  We have homeschooled them in the classical tradition for years. We treasure our family moments together.

A bit more biographical stuff … I hold a BA in English Literature and Dramatic Arts and an MA in Theology, am ordained in the Church of the Nazarene, and am a member of Actors’ Equity Association. My diverse background means I have lots of questions, I’m all about life-long change, and I’m always up for authentic and generous discussion.

Know yourself, reimagine everything, and be the peace.
